Analgesics intake and respiratory infections significantly increase the risk of heart attack

As it turned out, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofen that have an analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect, are dangerous to the heart. Scientists from the National Taiwan University Hospital have found out that NSAIDs can increase the risk of heart attack three times, The Daily Mail reports.

The researchers have analyzed the data of about 10,000 people admitted to hospital with a heart attack in the last 7 years. The scientists were interested in what way NSAIDs and respiratory infections affect the risk of heart attack. The study has shown that the risk of heart attack in people with respiratory infections taking NSAIDs during the illness orally was 3.4 times higher compared to the control group. In those patients who were administered with these drugs by a dropper, the risk was 7.2 times higher compared to the control group.

The experts have also found that participants who suffered from a respiratory infection, but did not use NSAIDs, experienced heart attacks 2.7 times more frequently than people in the control group. In the volunteers without respiratory infections but treated with NSAIDs, the risk was 1.5 time. The scientists note that the further research is needed.
