FIRST CONTACT LENSES APPROVED TO SLOW MYOPIA IN CHILDREN

The FDA has approved the first contact lenses indicated to slow myopia in children aged 8 to 12 years.

Scientists believe that slowing the progression of myopia in children may result in reduced risks of developing other vision problems.

The safety and effectiveness of MiSight contact lenses have been proved in a clinical study involving 135 children aged 8 to 12 years who used MiSight or conventional soft contact lenses. During the three-year period of study, the progression of myopia in children with MiSight was low compared to those with conventional soft contact lenses. In addition, less change in the axial length of the eyeball has been reported in the children with MiSight at an annual examination. During the study, no serious ophthalmic side effects were observed.

MiSight soft disposable contact lenses, manufactured by CooperVision Inc, can be used daily, but removed at night. MiSight lenses are approved for myopia correction and to slow the progression of myopia only in children without eye disorders.
