NEW VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19 WILL BE ABLE TO SIMULATE CORONAVIRUS STRUCTURE

When you look at the evolution of the current coronavirus, you can see that the virus is able to change two to three amino acids per month. Such mutations are fraught with unpleasant surprises, but they can be prevented with a universal vaccine. This is what the Massachusetts team is trying to implement.
In the United States a well-known manufacturer of the hepatitis B vaccine is going to use laboratory-grown proteins designed to mimic the structure of viruses. This will ensure the immune response induction.
A similar method has proved the safety in preliminary tests, which, however, were carried out to protect the body against another infectious disease - cytomegalovirus.
Unlike other companies involved in the development of Covid-19 vaccines, VBI Vaccines uses a pan-coronavirus approach. In other words, if successful, the drug will be protection not only from Covid-19, but also from related pathogens, including SARS and MERS.
Traditional vaccines are produced in different ways, and they may contain as follows:
- live viruses (weakened or modified in such a way as not to provoke diseases);
- inactivated or killed viruses;
- "neutralized" viral toxins;
- pathogen segments (both subunit and conjugate vaccines).
VBI Vaccines uses the latter method in which protein structures that mimic the virus structure are created in the laboratory and do not contain the viral genome.
