Researchers have found the cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the occurrence of involuntary obsessive thoughts (obsessions) and attempts to get rid of them by means of obsessive actions (compulsions). The scientists of the University of Würzburg have revealed a protein that plays an important role in the development of OCD, UPI.com reports.

This is about SPRED2 protein. This protein is abundant in the cerebellum and amygdala. SPRED2 inhibits ERK signaling pathway (Ras-ERK, MAPK / ERK). When SPRED2 levels are decreased, the activity of this pathway is increased. The study has shown that SPRED2 decreased level in mice resulted in excessive self-care.

So, OCD symptoms were manifested in rodents. After the introduction of ERK signaling pathway inhibitor, the severity of symptoms was decreased. In addition the scientists gave antidepressants to experimental animals. The scientists hope their discovery will help to develop new methods of treating OCD.
