Scientists are on the verge of development of new treatments for peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is the result of peripheral nerve damage. Symptoms vary from numbness, tingling, muscle weakness to severe pain, paralysis, and organ dysfunction. Peripheral neuropathy often develops in diabetics and people with HIV. Scientists of the University of California have carried out experiments with cells and rodents suffering from peripheral neuropathy associated with diabetes of the 1st, 2nd type, chemotherapy and HIV, Medical Xpress reports.

The scientists have discovered a molecular signaling pathway, the block of which contributes to the growth of sensory neurons, and prevents or reverses the development of peripheral neuropathy. Researchers earlier described, at least some of the fundamental processes associated with regeneration of peripheral nerves. In particular, it was found that mitochondria (power plants of cells) play an important role in nerves restoration.

In the new study, experts tried to find molecules and mechanisms that are responsible for the growth of sensory neurons. The researchers have found that activation of muscarinic receptors of acetylcholine neurotransmitter prevented the proliferation of axons (processes neurons). Experts suggest: Probably, there are some antimuscarinic drugs which may help people with peripheral neuropathy.
