The use of statins after a heart attack may save your life

As The Daily Mail notes, the risk of another heart attack, stroke and premature death is reduced by approximately 25% in people taking statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) after a stroke or heart attack. A new study carried out by scientists from the United States has made such conclusions.

The experts have analyzed 62,000 patients who had a heart attack or stroke in 1993-2013. The researchers have found out whether the participants took statins. Also, the scientists collected information about doses. Then the volunteers were monitored for three years or until their death. Scientists have found that statins protected participants from recurrent heart attacks, strokes and premature death.

The volunteers, who took the highest doses of statins, experienced recurrent heart attacks and strokes one fifth less that those who took the lowest doses of cholesterol-lowering drugs. According to the researchers, their findings prove the effectiveness of statins.
