Cure for PMS symptoms
As we know, the menstrual cycle can affect not only women’s health, but also mood. This manifests itself in the form of premenstrual dystrophic disorder, better known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Most women of reproductive age easily tolerate premenstrual syndrome, but in 3-5% of women the hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle cause the development of severe mental symptoms.
Currently, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (standard antidepressants) are used primarily to treat PMS. In spite of the effectiveness, these drugs are not suitable for all women, so scientists persistently look for alternative treatment options. Recently, a team of researchers from Uppsala University, Karolinska Institute and Umeå University has demonstrated that the mental symptoms of premenstrual dystrophic disorder are improved after the use of drugs of the class of progesterone receptor modulators. The researchers also noted that experimental therapy has helped to reduce the mental symptoms of PMS. 50% of women who received the drug have recovered completely compared to 21% of women who received a placebo.
