Effect of vitamin D on patients with prediabetes

The study has been lasted for 2.9 years and involved 2,423 overweight and prediabetic people. The first group received vitamin D3 at a dose of 4000 IU per day, the second – placebo. During the study, 28 cases of renal impairment in the vitamin D group and 30 cases in the placebo group were reported. The averages were the same in both groups.

Since vitamin D supplements are widely used, it is difficult for scientists to achieve the purity of the experiment. The researchers said that most participants had sufficient levels of vitamin D in their blood and had no serious kidney problems. 43% of them took vitamin D before the study at a dose of up to 1000 IU per day. Additional intake of vitamin D in moderate doses reduces the concentration of protein in the urine during the time. This has a positive effect on kidney health, but scientists will continue to conduct additional research.
