Helicobacter pylori is strongly associated with CVD

Helicobacter pylori infection leads to an increase in the thickness of the carotid artery wall and, as a result, cardiovascular disease may occur (CVD).

The link between atherosclerosis and Helicobacter pylori has been previously proven in clinical studies. By using previous data, scientists initiated a new study in which 12298 patients took part. 1360 of them had Helicobacter pylori. The scientists calculated the difference in the average thickness of the intima-medial layer of the carotid artery with and without infection.

As it turned out, the total thickness of the intima-medial layer of the right carotid artery was much more increased in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection compared to the control group. The scientists suggest that patients with the increased right carotid intima-media thickness should be tested for Helicobacter pylori. This examination is very important due to other risk CVD factors, because the infection can contribute to the development of vascular disorders.
