Scientists develops a synthetic vaccine in tablets

Therefore, the creation of vaccines in tablets would be a real breakthrough. It would facilitate not only the procedure itself, but also the transportation and storage of drugs. Creating a vaccine in tablets is a complex process with many limitations that a group of scientists from the UK have overcome.

As you know, during vaccination procedure weakened immune agents are introduced into the body. Such agents provoke an immune response and cause the production of antibodies. Since the tablets dissolve in the stomach, simply putting the “bad guys” in them will not work - they are simply processed by the gastric juice action. According to The Journal of Clinical Investigation, a team of specialists from Cardiff University led by Andrew Sivell have managed to create a new technology for producing synthetic vaccines that can be used to produce “vaccines in tablets”.

The scientists used artificial peptides in the production, the structure of which is similar to the viral one. The structure is built not of natural L-amino acids (levorotatory), but of their mirror reflections – D-amino acids (dextrorotatory isomers). Such amino acids cause an absolutely identical immune response and are resistant to the action of gastric and intestinal enzymes. D-amino acids are excreted only in small amounts by the kidneys. Most of the drug remains unchanged.
