Scientists have developed a new rabies vaccine
The vaccine has been designed at the Wuhan Institute of Virology by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Huazhong Agricultural University. In preclinical trials, the new vaccine has demonstrated a high level of effectiveness. The main composition of the vaccine is a chimeric virus named VEEV-RABV-G. In the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) all structural proteins have been replaced by the rabies virus glycoprotein (RABV-G) as a single structural protein. The study results have shown that the virus can replicate itself to high titers in cell culture without the help of any structural proteins. In a rodent trial, following a sufficiently low dose administration, an immune response which at the same time provokes less severe inflammation and causes fewer side effects than traditional vaccines was observed.
